Early Life Of Pratap Chandra Sarangi
Pratap Chandra Sarangi was born on January 4, 1955, in Gopinathpur, Nilagiri, Balasore, into a Brahmin family. He graduated with a Bachelor’s degree from Fakir Mohan College, Balasore, under Utkal University in 1975.
From a young age, Sarangi drawn to spirituality and aspired to become a monk at the Ramakrishna Math. He visited Belur Math, the headquarters of the Ramakrishna Order in Howrah, West Bengal, multiple times to pursue this goal. During his visits, the monks carefully considered his background and discovered that his widowed mother was still alive. They encouraged him to return home and care for her, advising that his spiritual journey could begin after fulfilling his family responsibilities. Heeding their advice, Sarangi returned to his village and became actively involved in social work.

The protests triggered by Home Minister Amit Shah’s remarks about Dr. B.R. Ambedkar turned violent in Parliament. Shah’s comment, “Ambedkar is the fashion,” provoked strong reactions from both BJP and Congress members. Tensions quickly escalated, resulting in physical confrontations between MPs from both sides, who pushed and shoved each other on the Parliament stairs.
As the situation grew more chaotic, each party accused the other of using force to block their opponents from entering the building. During the scuffle, BJP MPs Mukesh Rajput and Pratap Chandra Sarangi had injured and taken to Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital in Delhi. Both are in critical condition and receiving treatment in the ICU.
Pratap Sarangi suffered a severe head injury, losing a significant amount of blood before reaching the hospital. Doctors treated him by stitching up the wound. Mukesh Rajput also sustained a head injury and experienced elevated blood pressure. Both MPs are being closely monitor in the ICU.
This incident has intensified the political unrest surrounding Shah’s comments, further disrupting parliamentary proceedings.
Career Of Pratap Chandra Singh
Pratap Chandra Sarangi began his career as a district-level volunteer for the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) and also contributed to organizations like the Vishwa Hindu Parishad and Bajrang Dal. He initiated several educational projects for underprivileged communities, establishing schools called Samar Kara Kendra under the Gana Shiksha Mandir Yojana in tribal areas of Balasore and Mayurbhanj Districts.
A significant part of his professional life was spent as a Head Clerk at Nilgiri College in Balasore, Odisha. Sarangi entered the political arena in 2014 when he contested the Balasore constituency in the. Indian general election as a candidate for the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), though he was not successful. He contested again in the 2019 general election from Balasore and won, defeating the incumbent. Biju Janata Dal (BJD) candidate, Rabindra Kumar Jena, by a margin of 12,956 votes.
In May 2019, Sarangi has appointed as the Minister of State for Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises, as well as Animal Husbandry, Dairying, and Fisheries in the Government of India.
Controversies Of Pratap Chandra Sarangi
In 1999, Australian missionary Graham Staines and his two children were tragically. Killed in an attack while sleeping in their station wagon in the village of Manoharpur, Keonjhar, Odisha. The attack was allegedly carried out by members of the Bajrang Dal, an organization led by. Pratap Chandra Sarangi at the time.
Following the incident, Dara Singh, who had links to the. Bajrang Dal, along with 12 others, was convicted of the crime in 2003. However, Sarangi denied any involvement, claiming that the investigation was biased and flawed. In 2005, the Odisha High Court reduced Singh’s death sentence and released 11 others, citing insufficient evidence, including against Sarangi.
An official investigation by the Wadhwa Commission found no conclusive evidence linking a single group to the attack. Nevertheless, 13 people connected to Bajrang Dal were convicted. Additionally, the National Commission for Minorities’ inquiry revealed that the attackers had shouted “Bajrang Dal Zindabad” before committing the crime.
In 2002, Sarangi was also arrested for his involvement in a violent protest against the Odisha State Assembly by Hindu right-wing groups, including Bajrang Dal, facing charges of rioting, arson, and property damage.
